Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Adelaide held their respective spots in the top five and Port Douglas was the newest addition to the list, sneaking into 19th spot, up from 22nd last year. New South Wales was most represented in the top 20 with seven destinations, followed by six Queensland locations, two in Tasmania and one in each of Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. Wotif.com General Manager Brand Megan Magill said the list, which takes into account bookings from both business and leisure travellers, celebrates the great diversity Australia offers travellers. “It’s great to see both the major capital cities and regional areas included on the list,” Magill said. “Wotif.com receives 205,000 bookings each month which are all taken into consideration in compiling the Top Destinations list.” A recent customer survey conducted by Wotif.com also revealed that 11% of Australians admitted their 2008 New Year travel resolution was to visit somewhere in Australia they’d never seen before. “We are expecting to see domestic and Trans-Tasman travel remain strong in the coming year, despite the current economic condition,” Magill said.
