Aussies stay close but wish far

Wotif.com Travel Insights Survey highlights

BRISBANE – 14 August 2009: Europe has come up trumps as the top destination on Australians’ holiday wish list in the latest Wotif.com Travel Insights Survey*.

One in four selected Europe as the place they’d most like to visit, with Asia pulling 17% of respondents as second most popular.

Australia rounded out the top three wish list of holiday destinations with 16%, and New Zealand placed fourth on the list.

Megan Magill, Wotif.com General Manager Brand, said while we’re seeing Australians holidaying closer to home, an interest in overseas destinations is strong and is reflected in the list.

“Many Aussie travellers would like to experience a totally different culture and have listed Europe or Asia as their dream holiday destination,” Magill said.

The Wotif.com Travel Insights Survey also showed that while most Aussies continue to opt for more frequent shorter breaks, there has been an increase in the number of people saving up their annual leave for a longer one-off break.

“While shorter breaks are still the preference for Aussies, more people are thinking about a longer holiday this quarter,” Magill said.

“It’s still a small number of people at only 16% who are saving up their annual leave, but that’s up 8% from last quarter.

Respondents to the survey also indicated they prefer to try new holiday destinations, rather than suffer from “travel inertia”.

Wotif.com will make every holiday wish list a reality next week with their first ever Global Accommodation Sale. The sale launches Monday 17 August and will run for seven days. Sale deals with discounts of up to 75% will be available at www.wotif.com.

The Wotif.com Travel Insights Survey was conducted in June 2009 and looked at people’s travel habits between April and June 2009. 1,670 Australians responded to the survey.
