Online accommodation website, Wotif.com reveals Asians are crazy for shopping
Bangkok – 01 June 2009: Despite the global economy going
up the spout, 60% of Asian shoppers are showing no signs of tightening their
belts, while over 50% plan to travel within Asia for the sole purpose of
shopping, according to online accommodation website Wotif.com’s Shopping
Insight Survey.
The survey involving 426 respondents from Singapore, Thailand, Hong
Kong and Malaysia revealed that despite the doom and gloom, 60 % of Asian
shoppers don’t seem to be affected by global economic recession.
Wotif Group Executive General Manager for Asia, Sii Eawsakul said
“hotels have offered fantastic rates with great value adds thrown in which has
so far encouraged tourists to travel more within Asia, especially those with a
passion for bargain hunting.”
Largely unaffected by looming economy, 53% of respondents have planned
to travel within Asia for the sole purpose of shopping and don’t intend to curb
their shopping budget.
Singapore placed first in the survey as the favourite shopping
destination, ahead of Thailand, with Hong Kong in the third place.
“With excellent customer service and an array of high-end boutiques
and street stands, it’s no wonder that Singapore came in first.
“Apart from great shopping centres like the Paragon and Ngee Ann City,
the Great Singapore Sale also attracts local and foreign shopaholics alike.
Singapore is a shopping paradise for all,” said Sii.
According to the survey, fashion stuff including clothes, bags and
shoes are the most sought after shopping items, followed by food and electronic
equipment.
