Wot's love got to do with it?

Wotif.com survey reveals what people really think of Valentine’s Day

Brisbane 13 February 2007, Wotif.com (www.wotif.com) Australia’s leading accommodation website, has found that whether you are single or attached Valentine’s Day is most likely going to be a let down, with only 22% of people believing they will get what they desire, if anything at all.

Wotif.com’s Valentine’s Day survey, of more than 5000 respondents, found that almost half of the respondents (48%) dreamed about a weekend away, however, sadly only 3% of these people think their wish will be granted.

The second most popular response to what people would like to receive was anything at all (21%) followed by a romantic dinner (10%), a massage (6%) and jewellery and flowers (both 5%), however sadly an overwhelming 35% of respondents believed that they would get nothing.

Over half of the respondents wanted a romantic beachside getaway (51%) while a 5 star city stay and a hideaway in the hills came in second and third with 23% and 22% respectively.

The top two romantic spots in Australia as voted by the respondents were in Queensland with Tropical North Queensland and the Sunshine Coast taking 30% and 11% of the vote respectively. Cradle Mountain, Victoria’s Dayelsford/Hepburn Springs region and Ayres Rock tied in third position.

Internationally, Paris took the most votes for the most romantic city in the world with 30% of the votes, while the Greek Islands and the Caribbean came in second and third.

Despite not expecting their desired weekend away, more than half of the respondents saw Valentine’s Day as a great opportunity to show someone how much they care, while on the other end of the scale almost 30% of respondents believe that it is a Hallmark holiday created by the corporate world.

Resourceful respondents find it useful, with 21% of males and 7% of females agreeing Valentines Day is the perfect opportunity to build brownie points, most of these respondents declared themselves as hitched.

We might not be the best present givers but when it comes down to it Aussie’s are romantics at heart as even when asked if they would prefer to spend it with a host of hot celebrities most respondents (72% of males and 75% of females) considered their partner as their dream date.

The remaining respondents preferred to dream about a celebrity date, with Eva Longoria and Cameron Diaz as the top females and Jonny Depp and Daniel Craig being the most desired male dates.

The least desired male celebrity date was David Hasslehoff who did not receive any votes and was beaten by Sunrise presenter David Koche who received 1% of the votes along with “the guy from Deal or No Deal” Andrew O’Keefe and ‘the guy on the train in the morning’.
